Indirect measurement of key water quality parameters in sewage treatment plants

The present study assessed water quality parameters and attempts to compare four different Water Quality Indexes (WQIs) for consistency, similarity and reliability in assessing the water quality of river Benue -an inland river- under wet and dry seasons. The results demonstrate that River Benue is continually being polluted in both dry and wet seasons by different sources, particularly domestic sewage and storm runoffs from farmlands. The quality of the water generally exceeded physiochemical and microbiological infection risk limits recommended in water quality guidelines concerning their use for domestic, recreational and irrigational purposes. Proper sewage treatment and river quality monitoring are needed to guard against hazards to public health and vulnerable river water resources. The WQIs applied were: CCME WQI, BC WQI, Dinius’ WQI and Weighted Arithmetic WQI. To evaluate the differences between these indexes, data on ten water quality parameters (Temperature, pH, total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity, Nitrates, Phosphates, biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen and faecal coliform count) for two distinct seasons from 6 river monitoring sites along the river Benue at Makurdi reach, were used. Significant discrepancies were observed in classification results between the Dinius’ WQI and the other three WQIs. Similarly, the WA and BC WQIs showed an over-optimistic rating due to their eclipsing limitation. Among others, it was concluded that any of the four indexes except Dinius’ index can be adopted but the CCME water quality index would be best suited for assessing water quality in River Benue.

Combined sewer systems contain a large number of organic and inorganic pollutants from both domestic and industrial sources. These pollutants are often retained within the combined sewer system for significant lengths of time before entering sewage treatment works, or being spilt to a watercourse via a combined sewer overflow (CSO) during storm conditions. Currently little knowledge exists concerning the effects of in sewer processes on pollutants. Understanding of in-sewer processes is important for the effective and efficient design of treatment works and CSO chambers and for impact assessments on receiving waters. A series of studies covering storm and dry weather flow conditions were undertaken with the aim of investigating the nature of in-sewer processes. These studies consisted of marking a body of water with a fluorescent tracer. The tracer was then monitored at a series of downstream sites, and discrete samples collected from the body of water as it progressed through the sewer. The samples were analysed for water quality parameters and these results investigated in tandem with the detailed hydraulic information gained through the tracer studies. The results highlight the hydraulic differences between storm and dry weather conditions such as increased travel times and mixing under storm conditions. The Advection Dispersion Equation (ADE) and Aggregated Dead Zone (ADZ) model parameters have been quantified for the tracer data. The ADE mixing coefficient is shown to increase by an order of magnitude for storm conditions. The ADZ dispersive fraction parameter is shown to be approximately constant with flow. Chemical reactions and decay within the sewer system were found to be consistent with oxygen limitation.

A study was conducted to evaluate the water quality parameters of pond water at Mymensingh Urban region. The water samples were collected from 30 ponds located at Mymensingh Urban Region during August to October 2010. The chemical analyses of water samples included pH, EC, Na, K, Ca, S, Mn and As were done by standard methods. The chemical properties in pond water were found pH 6.68 to 7.14, EC 227 to 700 ?Scm-1, Na 15.57 to 36.00 ppm, K 3.83 to 16.16 ppm, Ca 2.01 to 7.29 ppm, S 1.61 to 4.67 ppm, Mn 0.33 to 0.684 ppm and As 0.0011 to 0.0059 ppm. The pH values of water samples revealed that water samples were acidic to slightly alkaline in nature. The EC value revealed that water samples were medium salinity except one sample and also good for irrigation. According to drinking water standard Mn toxicity was detected in pond water. Considering Na, Ca and S ions pond water was safe for irrigation and aquaculture. In case of K ion, all the samples were suitable for irrigation but unsuitable for aquaculture.J. Environ. Changes of microbial indices of water quality in the Vistula and Brda rivers as a result of sewage treatment plant operationThis paper reports the results of studies of microbiological changes in the water quality of the Vistula and Brda rivers after the opening of sewage treatment plants in Bydgoszcz. The study involved determining the microbiological parameters of water quality. Based on the results obtained, it was found that the quality of the water in both rivers had improved decidedly after the opening of the plants, although an increased number of individual groups of microorganisms was found at the treated sewage outlet from one of the plants.

The aim of this paper is to investigate water quality parameters in some potential pollutant sources from northern, southern and east-southern areas of Romania. Surface water quality data for some selected chemical parameters were collected and analyzed at different points from March to May 2017.

This study was conducted in order to understand the taste and odour problems that occurred in the Seine and the Marne rivers during the severe drought of 1976. Samples were taken every 15 days from several locations in the rivers themselves and from storage reservoirs upstream from Paris. Algae and actinomycetes were identified and counted. Metabolite concentrations were measured. These data were correlated with threshold odor numbers and bacteriological water quality parameters.

Since 2013, there has been an increase (>23%) in naval traffic using maritime routes and ports on the coastal fringe of Santa Marta, Colombia. Of major concern, and described by several studies, is the relationship between maritime traffic and coastal contamination. This study proposed a maritime traffic indicator considering the simultaneous effects of several relevant measurements of water quality parameters to estimate the impact of naval activity. The approach involved developing a model including the number of vessels, hull length, and permanence time in berths. In addition, water quality variables, considering climatic seasons, were used to verify association with maritime traffic and touristic activities. The high concentrations of total coliforms (TC) and dissolved/dispersed petroleum hydrocarbons in chrysene equivalents (DDPH) reported by the International Marina of Santa Marta (SM) were affected by the local anthropic activities, including tourism, naval traffic, and urban wastewater discharges. Moreover, our results suggest the occurrence of multiple chemical impacts within Tayrona National Natural Park (PNNT) affecting conservation goals. The estimation of the maritime traffic indicator proposed in this study may be an easy and more complete tool for future studies evaluating the impact of naval activities on environmental quality.
